World Map
The world map in Wanderfolk is a full-screen overlay (opened with M) that displays discovered biomes, villages, and building footprints on a 2048x2048 canvas. It pauses the game while open, with fog of war hiding unexplored regions until you travel through them.
Map Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Biome terrain | 2048×2048 canvas renders actual tile-level biome colors — greens for meadows, tans for desert, whites for tundra |
| Building footprints | Color-coded rectangles show building locations and types within villages |
| Home village marker | Your home village is marked with a distinct indicator for quick orientation |
| Fog of war | Unexplored regions are hidden — terrain reveals as you travel through it |
| Compass rose | Cardinal direction indicator anchored to the map |
Navigation Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Click + drag | Pan the map |
| Keyboard zoom | Zoom in and out |
| M or Escape | Close the map |
The map remembers your scroll position between opens, so you can pick up where you left off.
Minimap
The minimap in the corner of the game screen shows a real-time overview of your immediate surroundings at 200×200 pixels. It updates as you move, showing nearby terrain and discovered structures. The minimap is always visible during gameplay — no key press needed.
Tips
- Check the map before traveling to a new biome — building footprints reveal which villages have the crafting stations you need
- Use the home village marker to orient yourself when lost in unfamiliar territory
- Fog of war lifts permanently — revisiting areas you’ve already explored won’t re-hide them
- The map is especially useful for planning caravan intercept routes and identifying unexplored biomes for achievement progress
