NPCs That See the World Around Them
In most games, NPCs are blind. They repeat the same lines whether you're wearing full plate armor or standing in front of them half-dead and barefoot. In Wanderfolk, every NPC perceives over 45 distinct data points about you and the world — and weaves them into conversation naturally.
Walk into a blacksmith's forge carrying rare shadow ore and he'll comment on it. Stumble back to town at 2 AM after a failed dungeon run and the innkeeper asks what happened. Visit the herbalist while poisoned and she notices before you say a word. This isn't scripted — NPCs actually see your game state and respond to it in real time.
This system works alongside persistent NPC memory. NPCs don't just perceive the present — they remember the past and reference both. The result is conversations that feel startlingly aware, where every NPC seems to actually live in the same world you do.
They Know What You're Carrying
NPCs can see every item in your inventory — weapons, potions, crafting ingredients, food, quest items, and gifts. They also see what you have equipped: your armor, your weapon, even whether you're barefoot or bare-chested.
This creates interactions that feel genuine:
- Merchants notice valuable items in your bag and may offer to buy them before you even open the trade menu.
- Blacksmiths comment on the quality of your equipped weapon — or its poor condition.
- Guards react to what you're carrying. Show up armed to the teeth and they treat you differently than if you're unarmed.
- Herbalists see you carrying ingredients and suggest recipes you might not know.
Your appearance matters too. NPCs notice if you look wealthy or ragged, armored or exposed. The same conversation plays out completely differently depending on how you present yourself.
They Know What You've Fought
Every combat encounter is tracked and visible to NPCs. They know what you fought, whether you won or lost, how badly you were hurt, and when it happened. Return to the village after defeating a dungeon boss and NPCs react with admiration. Limp back after getting knocked out by bandits and they show concern — or mockery, depending on their personality.
- Recent victories — NPCs congratulate you, ask for details, or express relief that the threat is gone.
- Recent defeats — NPCs notice you were knocked out. Some offer help, others warn you about biting off more than you can chew.
- Nearby threats — If monsters or bandits are close by right now, NPCs know it. They'll urge you to be careful or ask you to deal with the danger.
- Your health — NPCs can see your current HP, hunger, and energy. Show up starving and exhausted and they'll mention it.
This combat awareness feeds into the quest system too. NPCs who know you've been fighting bandits might offer bounty quests. Those who saw you struggle in a dungeon might suggest you recruit companions first.
They Know What's Happening Around Them
NPCs don't exist in a vacuum. They perceive the world around them — time of day, weather, season, village economics, and major events — and their dialogue reflects it.
- Time & weather — Greetings change from "good morning" to "what are you doing out this late?" The farmer complains about rain ruining the harvest. The guard warns you about monsters that come out at night.
- Village economy — NPCs know their village's food supply, labor shortage, and morale. A hungry village produces desperate dialogue. A thriving one produces cheerful merchants.
- Recent events — Bandit raids, monster attacks, NPC deaths, village discoveries. Up to six recent events are visible to every NPC, and they reference them naturally.
- Wars & conflicts — If their village is at war, NPCs know who the enemy is, what phase the war is in, and why it started. They react accordingly — fear, determination, anger.
Each NPC also knows their own biome's flora, fauna, and dangers. The desert merchant knows about sandworms. The coastal fisherman warns about sea creatures. The mountain guard knows which passes are safe.
Gossip Travels
NPCs don't just see your state — they talk to each other about you. The gossip system means that what one NPC learns about you can spread to others. But awareness goes deeper than reputation:
- Social relationships — Every NPC tracks how they feel about other villagers. They have friends, rivals, spouses, siblings, and enemies. These relationships color their dialogue about other people.
- Romance awareness — NPCs know who you're courting. If you're pursuing one villager, others notice — and some get jealous. Your partner tracks what you've done together and references shared experiences.
- Standing & titles — Your village titles and achievement renown are visible. As you accomplish more, NPCs address you with increasing respect — or resentment, if they don't like you.
- Ambient speech — NPCs hear what nearby villagers say aloud. If someone just complained about you within earshot, the next NPC you talk to might have overheard it.
The combination of awareness, memory, and gossip means that your actions ripple through the entire social fabric of a village in ways that feel organic and unpredictable.
Every Conversation Is Different
Because NPCs perceive 45+ data points in real time, no two conversations are ever the same — even with the same NPC. Talk to the blacksmith at dawn when you're healthy and carrying ore, and he offers to teach you smithing. Talk to him at midnight when you're half-dead and your sword is broken, and he asks what happened and offers to repair your gear.
The awareness system creates emergent moments that can't be scripted:
- An NPC notices you're carrying antidotes and asks if you've been fighting poison creatures.
- A shopkeeper sees your gold is low and offers a discount out of pity — or demands payment upfront because they don't trust you.
- A villager who knows about a nearby bandit camp urges you to deal with it before their supply caravan arrives.
- Your spouse mentions the farm needs tending because they noticed your crops in their growth stage.
This is what makes Wanderfolk's NPCs feel alive. They don't just remember you — they see you. Every time you talk to one, the entire world is reflected back at you through their eyes.
