Children
Child NPCs appear in villages across every biome. They’re rendered at a smaller scale than adult NPCs and have their own sprite sets and behavior patterns. Children add life to villages without participating in combat, trade, or the reputation system the way adult NPCs do.
Behavior
Children have distinct routines that set them apart from other village NPCs:
- Roaming — children wander naturally through the village rather than standing at a fixed post. They move between buildings, explore the village edge, and change direction unpredictably.
- Animal play — when a cow, sheep, or other passive animal is nearby, children gravitate toward it. They’ll walk over, follow it, or stand close — a small ambient behavior that makes villages feel lived-in.
- Bedtime — when night falls, children head indoors and sleep. They won’t be found outside during monster raids or late-night hours. Their sleep schedule is earlier and more consistent than adult NPCs.
Adoption
Some villages have orphaned children — kids without a parent NPC in the village. You can build a relationship with an orphan through conversation and eventually adopt them.
Adoption is tracked through conversation progress, not a single dialogue choice. Multiple conversations are required before the option becomes available. If an orphan declines your adoption offer, the rejection is gentle — no reputation loss, warm tone, and the option remains open for future attempts.
Dialogue
All child NPC conversations use a dedicated lightweight model tuned for age-appropriate responses. Children talk like children — curious, direct, sometimes silly. They won’t discuss village politics, offer crafting tips, or share gossip the way adult NPCs do.
